'It’s Like Glitter': Timelapse Captures Stars, Stunning Sunsets, and Bioluminescent Water

When photographer Stuart McKay took his son out for a spot of stargazing in Queensland’s coastal Deepwood National Park one November evening, they were treated to a light show a little closer to home in the form of bio-luminescence in the water.

McKay, a resident of nearby Agnes Waters, was relaxing on the beach with his son when they were struck by a blue glow on the shoreline.

Doubting he could capture the natural spectacle and given the night’s crystal clear conditions, he set up his camera for a timelapse of the stars.

“Whilst the camera was shooting photos we spent time running our hands through the sand and water watching the magical sight of the phosphorus,” he told Storyful. “It’s like glitter as it falls through your hands.”

It was only after he was editing the video to post on social media that he realised he had caught the moment.

“It’s nice to be able to set up the camera and walk away to enjoy the amazing night sky,” he said. “I will always be captivated when looking at the stars.” Credit: StixPixMedia via Storyful
