The Global Sorghum Association announced Thursday that it has selected Texas Tech to host the third Global Sorghum Conference in 2026, citing the university's high respects in research.

The conference is scheduled to take place Sept. 14-18 in 2026.

In addition to the university's Carnegie Classification of Very High Research Activity, GSA said Tech's focus on rural resiliency, climate change, food security and One Health were also among the most biggest contributors for this choice.

“We are extremely excited that Texas Tech has been selected as the host for the next Global Sorghum Conference,” Joseph A. Heppert, vice president for research and innovation at Texas Tech, said in a news release. “This event will provide an outstanding opportunity for our university to showcase the incredible contributions our faculty are making to advances in agricultural science and put Lubbock’s famous hospitality on display for the global scientific community.”

According to a news release, the university intends to use the conference as a collaborative platform with GSA to promote the international importance of sorghum. Texas is the second-largest sorghum producer in the U.S., harvesting 3.15 million acres annually, including an abundance from the High Plains region.

The conference will build on the successes of this year's conference, "Sorghum in the 21st Century" that took place in Montpellier, France. The conference will also seek to foster interaction between academia, governmental and national program, non-governmental organizations and the private sector.

"The GSA is very excited about having the next sorghum congress in Texas, which is surely an important cradle of sorghum breeding, and we are looking forward to interacting with the Texas Tech University team in the congress organization,” said GAS Chair Jurandir Magalhaes.
