The Global South can jointly influence Russia and make it change its position regarding the war against Ukraine, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said told Saudi Arabian newspaper Arab News in an interview on Aug. 15.

In particular, China, Turkey and Saudi Arabia enjoy a special relationship with Russia, Kuleba noted.

“Perhaps each country acting on its own doesn’t have a sufficient amount of energy to make Russia change its position,” he said.

“But if you take all of these countries together, the cumulative effect on Russia could be a game changer.”

The purpose is to bring together everyone who is willing to change the situation for the better, Kuleba said.

“What the countries of Asia, Africa, Middle East and South America want to see are stable global food markets, prospects of trade with Ukraine, and tapping the full potential of education for their students in Ukraine,” the minister said.

“All of these functioned perfectly before Russia attacked. So, I don’t have the impression that the countries of the world see the situation through the prism of Ukraine’s regional interests, which are about close integration with the European Union and NATO.”

On Aug. 5-6, the city of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia hosted two-day negotiations on the Ukrainian peace formula, with high-ranking officials and diplomats from approximately 40 countries participating. Among them were notably representatives from India and China. Russia, however, was not invited.

Deputy Head of the Presidential Office, Ihor Zhovkva, reported that the goal of the negotiations in Jeddah was to convey points of the Ukrainian peace formula to the participating countries.

This was the second such meeting, with the previous one taking place in Copenhagen, Denmark, in June.

Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak after the talks stated that all participating countries at the Saudi Arabia meeting had “demonstrated allegiance to the principles of the UN Charter and respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.”
