Gloria Hunniford has revealed that she was recently rushed to hospital with sepsis.

The Loose Women panellist has been absent from the show for the last two weeks after initially being diagnosed with kidney stones.

Opening the show on Tuesday, Hunniford revealed why she had been absent, saying: "I’ve been sick so to see the audience and you girls I am happy to be here because I’ve had kidney stones."

Hunniford then discussed how her treatment went wrong: "When a specialist says to you 'it’s fine and we just put a camera up and a laser and we blast the stones to dust', and it comes out and 'that’s it' so you think it sounds very simple but wrong in my case anyway."

Complications led to Hunniford experiencing low blood pressure and a chest infection that spread to sepsis: "But next thing I knew being carted off to A&E because they couldn’t get my blood pressure above 73 which is very low, and I wasn’t far from critical.

"With me it was like somebody turned a tap and took all my energy away and it’s taken me a week or two to get better."

Hunniford also experienced health issues last year after suffering a fall at her home in June. The broadcaster tripped over a rug and broke her eye socket after falling on her face.

The 82-year-old at the time said: "I took it all on a very hard wooden floor and it was all on my face. I’ve cracked a bone under my eye unfortunately." The injury prevented her from taking part in Queen Elizabeth II's platinum jubilee celebrations.

She also thanked the NHS for their work and getting her to hospital in 10 minutes.
