Gloucester Township man charged with fatal shooting at La Cascata complex

GLOUCESTER TWP. — A 21-year-old township resident is accused of shooting a man during a chase at an apartment complex.

Hassan Battie is charged with the murder of Nasir Tart, 24, at La Cascata on April 16, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.

The shooting occurred about 10 minutes after a 5:15 p.m. encounter between Tart, a Gloucester Township resident, and Battie at a convenience store on the 1200 block of Blackwood-Clementon Road, according to a probable cause statement.

It says Tart left the store for the nearby apartment complex as a passenger in a vehicle. Battie allegedly followed on foot.

Surveillance video shows Battie walking with Tart and another person at the complex at 5:23 p.m., the statement alleges.

It claims Battie then is seen "chasing Tart...while firing a handgun at him" at 5:26 p.m..

Police responded to the shooting at 5:27 p.m., and Tart was pronounced dead at the scene.

Battie, who was arrested in Camden on April 22, is also charged with weapons offenses.

The charges are only allegations. Battie has not been convicted in the case.
