General Motors today announced that the lines at its Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly facility, one of several plants GM has earmarked for closure, will continue to produce the Cadillac CT6 and Chevrolet Impala sedans until January of 2020. Originally scheduled to be idled in June 2019 as part of GM's recently announced restructuring plan to focus on light trucks and crossovers, the decision is the result of GM's need to balance production timing while continuing the availability of Cadillac advanced technology features of the CT6-V (pictured below), primarily the Blackwing 4.2-liter Twin-Turbo V-8 and Super Cruise Level 2 autonomous driving tech.

Crucially, though the extension announced today doesn't affect the future of the plant past January 2020, and it could still see closure after the extension period is complete. The UAW issued the following statement in response to the announcement: "For the UAW brothers and sisters at Hamtramck, today is a sense of relief for their families and the community. The UAW welcomes today’s announcement that Hamtramck production will continue." The UAW also reiterated its pledge to "leave no stone unturned" in its efforts to keep Detroit/Hamtramck open indefinitely, as well as GM's Warren Transmission Operations in Michigan, Lordstown Assembly in Ohio, and a facility in Baltimore, Maryland.
