When the 2019 GMC Sierra debuted yesterday, we were fairly mesmerized by its wacky tailgate-within-a-tailgate. Frankly, we weren't quite sure what it was meant to do. Thankfully, GMC produced a quick video detailing all of the MultiPro tailgate's six different functions. It's more clever than we realized.

The MultiPro tailgate can, of course, function as a normal full-size gate. With the gate open, the little sub-gate can flip up to act as a load stop, keeping longer items securely in the box.

Things get more clever from here. With the big tailgate open, you can flip the mini-gate down. This lets you stand closer to the bed, which should make loading and unloading even easier. And when the mini tailgate is down, that flip-up load stop becomes a handy step. Supporting up to 375 lbs, it makes getting into the bed even easier.

You can also open the mini tailgate with the big gate closed, giving you a secure way to haul longer items or providing a counter-height ledge for your laptop or lunch. Clever stuff.

Be sure to check out the video below to see all these functions in action, and head over to Jalopnik for a detailed explanation of the tailgate's mechanics. It's a neat piece of tech in what already promises to be a top-notch truck.
