GMC Prep hoops teams off to opposite starts

Dec. 13—The 2022-23 basketball season almost could not have started any differently for the teams at Georgia Military College Preparatory School.

The boys team under second-year head coach Bo Kilby is toting a 4-1 record while the girls are searching for their first win.

The Bulldogs' one loss is sandwiched between a pair of back-to-back wins this season. They opened on Nov. 18 with a dominant 64-27 win over ACE Charter of Macon and followed that up with a nine-point victory at Gatewood. The GMC boys then suffered their lone loss, 64-61, at Trinity Christian of Dublin a couple Fridays ago before getting back on the winning track the next day at Jasper County, 63-59. The 'Dogs completed the season sweep of Gatewood Friday when the Gators came to Cordell, winning 57-38.

On the flip side, the Lady Dogs are struggling in a fashion similar to last year when they won only one game. Both points and defensive stops have been hard to come by as the GMC girls have averaged scoring only 13 points per game while giving up 55. Their closest game was the 42-23 loss at Jasper County. The team does have time to improve through, as region play does not begin until Jan. 6 at Glascock. Records against region opponents determine seeding for the region tournament, which in turn decides who will go on to the state playoffs.

The Bulldogs and Lady Dogs will be back on their home floor twice later this week when Jasper County High School of Monticello comes calling Friday as well as on Saturday when Brentwood of Sandersville makes the trip. Girls action versus Jasper County tips at 6 p.m. Friday with the boys to follow.
