Goats die in Dover Township barn fire; residence damaged in Goshen Township blaze

DOVER TOWNSHIP ‒ Dover firefighters battled a barn fire Thursday at 4180 Broad Run Dairy Road NW in Dover Township, while New Philadelphia crews responded to a house fire at 2423 Goshen Hill Road SE in Goshen Township.

Dover crews were dispatched at 11:44 a.m. for the barn fire, according to fire Capt. Michael Mossor. When they arrived, the rear of the barn was on fire.

"The neighbor discovered it and got most of the animals out. There were two goats lost in the fire," Mossor said.

Goats and pigs were kept in the barn.

The 40- by 80-foot wood frame, metal covered barn was a total loss. It was constructed in 2016, according to the Tuscarawas County Auditor's website. It had an appraised value of $49,940.

The fire began in the back of the structure and has been ruled undetermined, Mossor said.

Dover was assisted on the scene by firefighters from New Philadelphia, Sugarcreek, York Township, Wayne Township, Strasburg and Bolivar. Smith Ambulance and Tuscarawas County sheriff's deputies were also there.

No one was injured in the fire.

Goshen Township blaze

At 6:21 p.m. Thursday, New Philadelphia firefighters were summoned to the Goshen Township residence, a two-story single-family home.

Deputies arrived on scene and found a wall heater was on fire. They used two fire extinguishers in attempt to put the fire out. They also checked the house for occupants and assisted in getting family pets out, according to a fire report.

The structure was still on fire when New Philadelphia crews arrived. They extinguished the blaze.

The cause of the fire has been ruled undetermined. Damage has been estimated at $20,000 to the property and $7,500 to the contents.
