Goddard Eisenhower headlines state qualifiers for Kansas high school baseball, softball

With several regional championship games being played in the Kansas high school baseball and softball postseason brackets on Wednesday, Varsity Kansas has you updated for Wichita-area teams moving on in postseason play.

Wichita-area high school baseball regional tournament update

The Bishop Carroll baseball team secured its place at Eck Stadium again for the Class 5A state tournament, winning its opening-round game, 5-2, over Hutchinson and then holding off Newton in a 3-2 win in the regional final. The Golden Eagles improved to 21-1 on the season.

Goddard (16-6) will also be joining the Wichita-area teams in the 5A state tournament field, topping Andover Central 2-1 in a regional championship game. Across town, Goddard Eisenhower (17-4) also locked up its state bid with an 8-4 victory over Maize in its home regional final game.

In a showdown between two of the best teams in 3A, Wichita Collegiate topped Trinity Academy for the third straight time, this time in a 6-4 victory in a regional championship game, to successfully return to the state tournament as defending champions.

Trinity entered the final week of the regular season with a perfect record, but Collegiate swept them on May 11 and then tacked on a third straight win in Wednesday’s regional final hosted by Chaparral. Trinity survived a 10-9 shootout win over Kingman in the semifinal, while Collegiate won a 3-0 pitcher’s duel with Haven in its semifinal contest. The Spartans head back to Manhattan with a 19-4 record.

Sedgwick (18-5) is headed back to the 2-1A state tournament after a 6-2 victory over Remington in the regional final hosted by Moundridge. Little River (20-1) also punched its ticket to the 2-1A state tournament, courtesy of a 4-1 victory over Salina Sacred Heart in its home regional final.

In 6A action, Campus reached the regional final in Topeka but ultimately fell to the host in an 11-1 loss to Topeka. The Colts wrapped up a 10-12 season, which included a 7-1 victory over No. 6 seed Junction City in the opening round. In the Lawrence Free State regional, Wichita West lost to Lawrence 4-1 and Wichita East lost to Free State 10-1 in the opening round.

Wichita-area high school softball regional tournament update

City League champion Bishop Carroll romped its way back to the Class 5A state tournament by outscoring its opponents 22-0 to easily claim a regional championship on Wednesday.

Goddard Eisenhower (17-5) will join the Golden Eagles in Wichita for the state tournament, but the Tigers had to work a little harder for the state bid. It took eight innings for Eisenhower to break a scoreless tie to win 1-0 over Topeka West in the opening round, then the Tigers won 6-2 over Great Bend to punch their ticket back to state.

Meanwhile, Kapaun Mt. Carmel saw a 17-win season end in the regional finals, as Salina South won 3-1 to advance to the 5A state tournament.

Andale-Garden Plain exacted some revenge after being swept by Rose Hill in the regular season, knocking off the Rockets on their home field in a 3-1 win in the regional championship game. Andale-Garden Plain advanced to the 4A state tournament with a 15-7 record.

Haven’s pitching was too much for Trinity Academy in a 3A regional final game played in Cheney, as the Wildcats escaped a loaded regional by winning the regional final 11-1 over the Knights to improve to 22-1 this season.

At the Class 2-1A level, Hillsboro completed its Cinderella run as a No. 7 seed all the way to the state tournament after three straight upsets, concluding with an 8-3 victory over Moundridge in the regional final. Hillsboro advances to state with an 8-13 record. Meanwhile, heavy favorite Bluestem (22-1) had little issue making its way back to the 2-1A state tournament by winning the regional hosted by West Elk following a 15-6 win over Oxford.

In the lone 6A regional, Campus advanced to the regional final at Washburn Rural following a 15-0 win over Wichita Heights, but the Colts lost 6-0 to the host school, Rural, in the final.
