Taiwanese-Canadian actor and model Godfrey Gao has died while filming an entertainment series in China, his management confirmed.

The 35-year-old star was participating in a team event on Chase Me, when he suddenly collapsed and died from what producers have said was a heart attack.

Chase Me challenges its contestants to take part in a series of elaborate physical tasks.

A producer said: “After two hours of all-out efforts to save him, the hospital [said] he had suffered a sudden cardiac death.”

Gao’s management, Jesta, said in a statement: “In the early hours of 27 November, our beloved Godfrey collapsed while filming on set. Unfortunately following three hours of medical rescue efforts, he left us.

“We are very shocked and saddened and even until now find it impossible to accept.”

Jesta thanked “every fan of Godfrey’s for their concern”, adding: “Please respect Godfrey’s family in this time of sorrow and refrain from disturbing them. We will accompany Godfrey’s family to handle discreet funeral arrangements. Thank you, everyone.”

Gao, born Tsao Chih-Hsiang in Taiwan, became the first Asian model to appear on a Louis Vuitton advertisement campaign in 2011.

He found fame through his lead role in TV drama Remembering Lichuan, and had roles in 2013’s The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, alongside Lily Collins and Lena Headey, and Chinese blockbuster Shanghai Fortress.

Gao also provided the Taiwanese voiceover for the character of Ken in Toy Story 3.
