Godzilla Screenwriter Promises Bigger and Better Sequel
Warner Bros and Legendary Entertainment’s 2014 reboot of iconic monster movie series ‘Godzilla’ may have proved a bit divisive among audiences and critics, but with a global box office haul of just under $529 million (just over £339 million) a follow-up movie was never in any doubt.
Though the sequel is still a few years away, writer Max Borenstein has naturally been asked about it - and, even more naturally, he tells Collider that great things can be expected.

“I’m writing it now, and it’s really going to be great. I don’t want to go off book and tell you anything that I’m not allowed to tell you.
“The response to the first film was really exciting, but now that that world is established, we can do bigger and even better things. We’re really stoked.”
Indeed, many will agree that it’s a good thing that the ‘Godzilla’ sequel can open in an already-established world, as many felt it took too much of a slow burn approach, with an excess of dialogue and not enough action - and many more, including star Bryan Cranston, had some reservations about how the characters were treated.
As to whether this means the sequel will forgo all the talky-talky stuff and get straight to the giant monster action; well, Borenstein isn’t saying. Nor is he remarking either way on reports that such other classic Toho Studios monsters as Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah might appear this time around.
Nor does he remark on the fervent speculation that the film will in some way tie in with Legendary’s upcoming ‘Kong: Skull Island,’ paving the way to a remake of ‘King Kong Vs Godzilla.’
Still, Borenstein did confirm that he’s looking forward to reuniting with director Gareth Edwards:
“Yeah, I hope [we will collaborate closely]. He’s making ‘Star Wars [Rogue One]’ right now, so he’s a little preoccupied, but yeah. Gareth is amazing. It’s exciting to get to work with him again.”
The as-yet untitled ‘Godzilla’ sequel is due June 2018 - and with the ‘Jurassic World’ follow-up opening that same month, we could have a proper battle of the giant monsters on our hands. And that’s without even mentioning the first new Japanese ‘Godzilla’ movie in over a decade, which is due in 2016…
