GoFundMe account created to benefit son of Shrewsbury woman killed in crash

SHREWSBURY — A local woman killed in a crash involving a school bus last week left a husband and a teenage son.

A family friend has created a GoFundMe account to help pay for April Handley's son's college tuition. The GoFundMe is seeking $10,000 and as of 7 a.m. Tuesday, it had raised more than $6,700.

"Jackson (son) and Dean (husband) lost their beloved mother and wife, April Handley, in a car accident in Shrewsbury earlier this month," the GoFundMe posting reads. "Jackson is a sophomore at Shrewsbury High School and a talented athlete and student. As a community, we hope to raise funds to help April's family in their time of need. Please consider donating what you can."

According to a Facebook post from Dean Handley, he and his wife met while working at Sepracor Inc. (now known as Sunovion Pharmaceuticals Inc.) in Marlborough, where she was a sales rep before leaving to raise their son, Jackson, now 15.

"Tragically my wife April, Jackson’s mom, died Sept. 15 at UMass Medical Trauma Surgery from complications of a car crash that happened less than mile from our house. Jackson, almost 16, is attempting to put on a brave face but I am having a hard time," Dean Handley wrote.

Authorities said April Handley, 49, was driving her SUV at 10:55 a.m. Thursday on South Quinsigamond Avenue near May Street when, for an unknown reason, she crashed the vehicle into a school bus.

The school bus was empty other than a driver and an aide, who each suffered minor injuries. Handley was taken to UMass-Memorial Medical Center in Worcester where she later died.

Handley was owner and operator of Trade for Greatness, which traded in the financial markets.

According to the website, Handley was formerly a teacher, a comedian and actress, as well as working in pharmaceutical sales and management. She began trading futures and worked with several trade-related businesses before starting Trade for Greatness.

The cause of Thursday's crash remains under investigation by the Shrewsbury Police Department, the Worcester District Attorney's Office and the Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council's accident reconstruction unit.
