‘Going to be blown away’: Parts of Ballantyne Reimagined nearing completion

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — It’s wild to imagine that a few years ago, an 18-hole golf course once stood in what’s now a busy construction site in Ballantyne.

Now, along what was the 18th hole of Ballantyne Golf Course, is Bowl Street which cuts right through an almost miniature downtown. The project, Ballantyne Reimagined, aims to bring a little bit of every aspect of life to the area.

“I mean, I think you can start your day here with Fly Kid Fly coffee, we’ve got Solid Core, you can get your work out in, lots of places for breakfast and lunch and then drinks and dinner and then entertainment,” said Christina Thigpen with Northwood Office, “End your day with the concert at the AMP.”

Northwood Office owns 535 acres in Ballantyne. Construction crews at “The Bowl” have been putting unique touches on each space in preparation for tenants like Flower Child, Old Mecklenburg Brewery, North Italia, and Honeysuckle Gelato.

Many of those businesses expect to be open this Spring.

“Not only the Ballantyne, but the entire region,” Thigpen said. “I think it really ups the culinary and entertainment scene for the whole Carolinas,” she continued, “We really consider ourselves to be the new heart of the Carolinas; something for everyone. We just want Ballantyne to be the complete destination for people to enjoy beyond the workday.”

The new businesses will be right outside the door of a 356-unit, 26-story residential tower. Portions of it will be open and available for move-ins this October.

“I think people who haven’t been to Ballantyne in a while are going to be blown away,” Thigpen said, “Because it’s really unexpected and I think will be a game changer for the entire region.”

The traffic The Bowl attracts is another concern for residents in the area. Reps say they’re confident they have enough parking and have also reserved space for three light rail stops in the event the city plans to expand that service to Ballantyne.
