It’s going to be chilly in Miami this week. Here’s how to make sure your pets stay warm

Temperatures in the 40s are coming to South Florida, so grab a blanket and crank up the heat if you have access to a thermostat.

A cold front making its way south will bring strong winds to coastal cities and lower temperatures all around. Wednesday will be the coldest morning of the week, with temperatures ranging anywhere from the low to upper 40s. The coldest areas will likely be inland.

It may feel even colder than that, thanks to winds reaching 20 mph, according to the National Weather Service in Miami. That means wind chills in the mid-30s.

Though forecasters are not expecting freezing temperatures, pet owners should take precautions Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Pets (as well as sensitive plants) should not be left outside overnight.

According to the Humane Society, it’s best if dogs can hunker down in dry and draft-free places raised from the floor. Cats should not be outside for extended periods of time, even if they are cats of the outdoor variety.

Short-haired dogs might feel more comfortable on Wednesday morning sporting a sweater.

None of this is unheard of in South Florida — cold snaps happen, although they have happened a little less frequently in recent years, said NWS forecaster Steven Ippoliti.

There is a slight chance of rain on Wednesday and Thursday, but the days should be clearer, and warmer, as the weekend approaches.
