A new hardware store is preparing to open in the former Instaprint location on West Sixth Avenue in Eugene.

Handy’s Hardware is a new venture from the owners of Gold Beach Lumber, an Oregon-based lumber and hardware retailer.

The company is in the process of renovating the former print and graphics shop into a 6,000-square-foot hardware convenience store. Gold Beach Lumber president Ryan Ringer, who lives in Eugene, said he found the town had a variety of good hardware stores, but they were all on the perimeter of town or not quite what he was looking for.

“I was finding when I was running into these large, big box stores, you know, it's taken me 20-25 minutes to get there with traffic each way. And you know, you walk up and down the aisles for 20 or 30 minutes,” said Ringer. “You're well over an hour by the time you get back home.”

Ringer said he wanted to bring another, smaller, more convenient hardware store to serve the area in and surrounding the Whiteaker and Jefferson Westside neighborhoods and when the location came up on Sixth Avenue it fit the bill perfectly.

Signage is expected on the building in the last week of October with a tentative opening date for the first week of November. Ringer said he hopes to have convenient versions of all the common hardware store departments and make the store quick and easy to navigate.

“We would love to paint your entire house but that's not what we're after,” he said. “If you just say 'hey, I want to change the color of this wall to green and I want to pick up my paint in 15 minutes' — I'm your guy.”

Ringer said the store will bring approximately 10 jobs to the area.

This will be the ninth store for Gold Beach Lumber, which also operates the Cascade Home Centers in Creswell and Cottage Grove. The stores are part of the Do It Best materials buying cooperative, which also handles architectural design of new stores.
