Update: the National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.

AUGUSTA COUNTY — It's that time of year when snow or no snow or how much snow is the question everyone is trying to figure out so they can plan accordingly.

According to Tom Kines, senior meteorologist at AccuWeather, the total accumulation in the Valley is looking more like 1 inch than 3 inches of snow. If you head north, like Winchester, it'll be closer to a few inches, he said.

"I think snow comes later on tonight," said Kines. "If you have to do anything this evening, you're fine. And then the snow will continue into the day tomorrow. We're thinking around an inch."

Kines said this time around the emphasis is on slight. "There could be lingering flurries Friday afternoon and evening."

Temperatures Friday aren't too bad, he said. But Saturday, you'll need to bundle up if you have to be outside. The wind chill will make it feel much colder.

The expected snow led the National Weather Service to issue a winter weather advisory Thursday afternoon. The advisory will last from 1 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, covering Augusta and Rockingham counties, along with the Central Virginia Blue Ridge. Total snow accumulation 1-2 inches, said NWS.

Dangerously cold wind chills are possible Saturday night, according to a hazardous weather outlook alert issued at 3:04 p.m. Thursday.

The alert warns travelers to slow down and account for slippery road conditions while driving, and to watch for slippery steps on sidewalks, stairs, and driveways.
