Going out for the Super Bowl? These 5 Newport area restaurants have deals in place

After years of watching the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl, it's once again the norm to see two teams of little local rooting interest in the big game.

But instead of the anxiety of watching the hometown team in another close game, now local spectators can sit back and relax. Maybe there are a couple of dollars placed on some bets to keep you interested or you're involved in a pool. Or you can just enjoy the game at a local establishment, order some food and drinks and watch the commercials.

Whatever your fancy we called around to find out what some places are offering on Sunday. So start making your plans.

Tavern on Broadway is a local favorite, a gem hidden in plain sight just across the street from the perennially packed Fastnet Pub. On Super Bowl Sunday, the tavern will be offering half-price bar food including Super Bowl classics like wings and nachos, a number of beer specials, and perhaps most enticingly a “buck a shuck” special on fresh local oysters at their raw bar. This writer also highly recommends the classic tavern burger – it’s a classic for a reason.

The Fifth Element, a popular bar and grille featuring an open kitchen layout, will be displaying the big game on a big screen, bringing in an enormous projector screen to maximize their patrons’ viewing experience. Enjoy the big game in refined style while eating classics like wings or slightly elevated fare like mussels with andouille sausage. Sip on one of the many domestic and imported beers on tap or from the bottle, or on a fancy custom cocktail such as a Cuban 8 Highball (a Caribbean rum take on a Moscow Mule), a raspberry ice martini with Chambord or a “pink flamingo” –  featuring Malibu coconut rum, vanilla vodka and cranberry and pineapple juice.

Enjoy the game on one of their many big screen TVs and enjoy dishes including Kansas City BBQ wings, Buffalo wings, giant soft pretzels with Ragged Island smoked lager beer cheese and Portuguese poutine – crispy skin-on fries with chourico gravy, provolone cheese and sweet peppers and onions. While Rejects will have a large projector screen ready in case people want to bring the party to Middletown, founder Greg Martell told the Daily News Rejects is really the ideal place for two things: pre-gaming the big game, and picking up high-quality brews to go. Rejects sells their house-brewed beers by the four-pack, but if you buy a case, you also get a free 32 oz growler. He mentioned Super Bown mainstays like nachos would also be available for delivery from Diego’s, and Southern Wharf Kitchen would be offering a $20 special on a dozen jumbo wings with two sauces, available for both pickup and delivery.
