BRIGHTON — With construction already underway in downtown Brighton, city officials have announced an event to commemorate the streetscape overhaul.

The Brighton Downtown Development Authority will host "Digging for Gold," a prize hunt following a brief ceremony, beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 13, at the CoBach Center, 202 W. Main St.

Officials say at least $5,500 in prizes and gift cards will be buried. Guests will use a shovel to dig for prizes at the groundbreaking site, according to a release.

Attendees will also be able to learn more about the city's more than $8.5 million revamp of the downtown streetscape on Main Street between Grand River Avenue and 1st Street, and Grand River Avenue between St. Paul and North Street. Construction is expected to last through at least October.

Construction and closures on Main Street began in January, when the city began replacing an aged water main. The project includes a narrower Main Street and wider sidewalks, improvements at Mill Pond Park, new lights, new benches and new planters — among other changes and additions to the downtown streetscape.

Some downtown events have been cancelled or moved due to downtown construction.

"Hear from city dignitaries, engineers and planners about what changes lie ahead, and what people can expect as we go through the transformation this summer," officials wrote in a statement.

The top prize at the "Digging for Gold" event will be a custom green garnet ring in white gold with shoulders set in diamonds designed by Al Hummer of Ore Creek Jewelers, which is valued at $2,100. About two dozen local businesses will contribute other prizes.
