Ahead of the premiere of "The Golden Bachelor," star Gerry Turner is revealing that fans can expect plenty of romance on his season —including a kiss or two on night one.
Turner, a 72-year-old widower from Indiana, is the first lead of the newest addition to the Bachelor Nation franchise. While fans will get to follow along his journey every Thursday night, Turner's season already finished filming.
The retiree spoke to The New York Times about his experience on the show and shared that he decided to go for a kiss on the first night, defying the advice his granddaughters — Payton, 21, and Charlee, 16 — gave him.
He told the publication that his granddaughters warned him to hold off on kissing any of the 22 women that fans will see him meet during the premiere.
"I failed," he said, without confirming how many women stood out to him the first night.
He also implied Bachelor Nation should anticipate a season filled with romance and very little drama, adding that there was only "a very minor situation" that arose during filming.
According to the outlet, Turner chose to have some intimate conversations off camera to respect the women's privacy. He seemed to be solely focused on building a connection and tried not to get caught up in being on a dating show.
"I don't know what it means to be a 'grandzaddy' and I don’t know what 'rizz' is, and I really don’t know what it means to be trending. All those things are kind of immaterial to me. They don't matter," he said.
What to know about Gerry Turner
In Bachelor Nation, Turner represents a lead who is "there for the right reasons." He said he submitted an application for the "Bachelor" spinoff hoping to show that people his age can still find love and live "vigorous lives."
Turner was previously married to his high school sweetheart, Toni, for 43 years before she died in 2017. In July, Turner appeared on the "Men Tell All" episode of "The Bachelorette" Season 20 and spoke about planning his retirement with Toni before she suddenly fell ill.
He told the New York Times that he wanted to share the story of her passing without it being "sensationalized" on the show.
"I really didn’t want to tell that story over and over. I wanted it to be out there for people to know, but I also wanted to move on," he explained.
Turner has two daughters, Angie and Jenny. He is a retired restaurateur and according to his bio, is "charming," "romantic" and ready to put himself back out there.
All about the contestants
Turner's new love story will begin Sept. 28 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC as Bachelor Nation will watch 22 women, who are all in his age group, compete to win his final rose.
According to a press release, the “accomplished” ladies hail from all over the U.S. and are ready to “take time away from their established home lives, friends and family in the quest to rediscover love.”
While some of the contestants are retirees, others are still going strong in their established careers. The cast includes a bunch of interesting professions from a wedding officiant to a pro-aging coach.
Jesse Palmer, host of the upcoming season of “The Golden Bachelor,” told “E! News” that the contestants brought a level of confidence that’s “unlike anything I’ve ever seen.”
“It’s always the limo entrance arrival, the nerves stepping out, cameras, the mansion, all of it. Because they’ve lived life [and] they’ve had experiences, they are rock stars—and all throughout this season. On group dates, on one-on-one dates, traveling, they just shine,” he said.
While that first night at the mansion after the limo introduction often lasts well into the next morning, the older contestants “partied hard.”
“The night does not end at 10 p.m. like I thought it might—only because people were a little bit older, maybe they wouldn’t be able to stay up as late,” Palmer said, adding that some people from the flagship show often take “little naps” throughout the night.
“There were no naps taken on ‘The Golden Bachelor,’” Palmer shared. “They partied hard, and they went from sundown to sunup.”
One of those contestants is already Bachelor Nation royalty: Patty James, the mother of former “Bachelor” star Matt James, will be vying for Turner’s love. “I want to meet someone who loves and cherishes me that I can live out my golden years with,” she said, according to Variety.
Matt James shared a photo of his mom’s “Bachelor” photo on Instagram shortly after her participation was announced, writing, “i ccc uuu mama.”
