Golden Globes 2019: Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg charm awkwardly; Carol Burnett amazes

From the hosts to the presenters to the winners, here's what delighted us and what made us roll our eyes at the 76th annual Golden Globe Awards Sunday:

A couple of hosts "Killing" it

When NBC announced that "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" star Andy Samberg and "Killing Eve" nominee Sandra Oh were co-hosting the show, it was one of those moments where I first said "huh," and then I quickly said, "of course!" And the adorable odd couple did not disappoint. From the moment they arrived on the red carpet, they set a chic and goofy tone for the night. Their shared opening monologue had a great barb about the Oscar hosting drama, and some adorable self-deprecating jokes about how they’re the nicest people in Hollywood.

Niceness was the early theme of the night, as the hosts "slammed" celebs in the Beverly Hilton ballroom with jabs about how "hot" and "talented" they are. It's a sweet and refreshing way to kick off the new year, especially after many less-than-stellar Globes hosted by Ricky Gervais. It was a bit awkward at times, but when you're nice and awkward, it's easier to forgive.

“‘Spider-Man,’ oh yeah!”

An early contender for the best acceptance speech of the night came from the filmmakers behind “Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse." They accepted the award for best animated film with shock and joy, sharing the inclusive message of the movie. That's how an inspirational speech is done, even if the orchestra plays you off.

This is a TV awards show too, right?

Samberg joked that Jim Carrey, nominated for his Showtime series "Kidding," should move to the back of the ballroom with the TV people, but even for the Globes, some of the early TV honors felt more perfunctory than usual. Shoving best actor in a drama and best drama one right after the other, with the same presenters and no video, was a dumb move. And it didn't give proper emphasis to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's understanding (unlike the TV Academy's) that "The Americans" deserves all the awards.

Shots, shots, shots, shots, shots, shots, EVERYBODY!

Samberg and Oh, riffing off the "order pizza for the audience" awards-show staple, sent white lab-coated individuals into the audience to deliver flu shots. It was pretty dumb, but millennials are legally required to sing along to LMFAO's "Shots," so it was still fun.

And the winner of the Carol Burnett Award is …

Do other people have to win the Carol Burnett Award now? How can anyone follow the humor and grace of the woman herself, who gave a moving ode to a golden TV era that featured full orchestras and and 65 costume changes a week. Like she said, thank goodness for reruns and YouTube.
