Golden Globes 2023 snub female directors as nominations short list announced

The 2023 Golden Globe nominations raised eyebrows after not a single female director received a nod.

This comes despite 2022 seeing a number of critically acclaimed films helmed by women, including Sarah Polley’s Women Talking, Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Woman King and Chinonye Chukwu’s Till.

The all-male director nominees include James Cameron for Avatar: The Way of Water, The Daniels for Everything Everywhere All at Once, Baz Luhrmann for Elvis. Martin McDonagh for The Banshees of Inisherin, and Steven Spielberg for The Fabelmans.

Furthermore, none of the 10 films nominated in the best picture drama and comedy categories are directed by women. In the screenplay category, Polley is the only woman who received a nomination for Women Talking.

This is not a one-off, in the history of the Golden Globes, only nine women have been nominated for directing, with three winners in its 80-year history — Barbra Streisand for Yentl (1983), Chloé Zhao for Nomadland (2020) and Jane Campion for The Power of the Dog (2021).

At the 2018 Golden Globes, presenter Natalie Portman made a point of remarking on the “all-male nominees” after presenting the award to Guillermo del Toro for The Shape of Water. Greta Gerwig notably wasn’t included that year for Lady Bird.

The Golden Globes will be held on January 10 and hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael.
