New round of talks as government shutdown heads to Week 3

While President Donald Trump told Democrats Friday that he is prepared to allow the government shutdown to go on for months or even years, White House officials will meet with lawmakers over the weekend to discuss a deal to re-open the government. Trump maintained that he wants $5.6 billion for border security and wall funding, and dismissed proposed compromise ranging from $1.3 billion to $2.5 billion. Democratic lawmakers have remained adamant in their opposition to any federal money for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border and said they would continue to push legislation the new Democratic House passed late Thursday. The legislation, which would fund all eight departments for the remainder of the fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30, includes $1.3 billion for border security, but nothing for a wall — the reason Trump said he rejected it.

NFL playoffs kick off with Wild Card round

The NFL playoffs are finally here, and the first weekend of action is loaded with great games. The best game of the weekend may be Sunday's first game, as the Los Angeles Chargers travel to Baltimore to try and avenge a Week 16 loss to the Ravens (1:05 p.m. ET, CBS). Last but not least, the Chicago Bears play host to the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles (4:40 p.m. ET, NBC). Our staff made picks for every game, including which team is most likely to advance from this weekend all the way to Atlanta next month for the Super Bowl.

Slain officer who rekindled debate over California’s sanctuary law laid to rest

A memorial service and burial are scheduled Saturday for the shooting death of a police officer who has rekindled a debate over California’s sanctuary law. Prosecutors say Gustavo Perez Arriaga shot and killed Newman Police Department Cpl. Ronil Singh, 33, after the officer stopped his vehicle to see if he was driving drunk. President Donald Trump seized on the case to call for tougher border security and criticized the state's sanctuary city policies, which limit the cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. Singh, who emigrated from his native Fiji to pursue a career in law enforcement, joined the Newman police force in 2011. He is survived by his wife and 5-month-old son.

CES is going to be all about 5G!

This year's Consumer Electronics Show kicks off — unofficially — Sunday , and it will be all about 5G broadband and artificial intelligence, and how they will change our lives as we know it. The faster 5G internet signals will provide the backbone needed for autonomous self-driving cars and smart cities, for improved traffic flow and other services. Artificial intelligence will take the promise of the still burgeoning Smart Home, and using our voices to command Alexa and Google to turn on and off the lights and tell us the weather. Other talking points include 8K TV, in-car entertainment, self-driving cars and motorcycles, and how voice commands can be implemented everywhere.
