Golden Globes Nominations 2020: Netflix Wins, Female Directors Lose, & Meryl Streep Beats Her Own Record

On Monday morning, Tim Allen, Dakota Fanning, and Susan Kelechi Watson announced the Golden Globes nominations for 2020, revealing huge wins for Netflix, zero nominations for female directors, and Meryl Streep earning her record 34th nomination. (Streep previously held the record for highest number of Golden Globes nominations at 33, and this year broke her own record.)

While some of these nominations make total sense to us (like Streep’s iconic Mary Louise in Big Little Lies, or Jennifer Lopez’s nomination for Hustlers), there was one big point of contention on Twitter this morning. The Golden Globes, for the fourth year in a row, nominated only male directors for its Best Motion Picture categories, despite female-directed favorites like Booksmart, The Farewell, and Hustlers being nominated in other categories. In fact, in all 77 years of the Golden Globes, only five female directors have ever been nominated — a staggeringly low number no matter how you look at it.

So, while female directors were once again snubbed, the day’s biggest winner seems to be Netflix. On the TV side, Netflix’s The Crown tied for most-nominated show alongside Chernobyl and Unbelievable. And on the film side, Netflix swept the category with Marriage Story (six nominations) and The Irishman (five nominations) leading the pack.
