Goldstar Memorial installed at Nibroc Park

Nov. 10—CORBIN — In honor of Veterans Day and veterans of the United States Armed Forces, the Corbin Garden Club has installed a Gold Star Memorial Marker at Nibroc Park in downtown Corbin.

The marker signifies the three H's of the Gold Star program: Honor, Hope, and Healing. Gold Star families are so named because they have lost a family member serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Friday's event was attended by several veterans and Gold Star families, in addition to the Corbin High School JROTC and Choir, who presented colors and sang the national anthem respectively.

Speakers at the event included Corbin Garden Club President Lee Parks, South Atlantic Region Director of National Garden Clubs Carcille Burchette, and Colonel Mike Farley of Corbin JROTC.

Of the event, Col. Farley said, "We are grateful to be here to honor our veterans...We want to thank the Corbin Garden Club for organizing this."

Prior to the dedication, Parks explained the club's desire to take up the project.

"We think it's important to remember our veterans," she said. "It is important to remember those people who have given their lives in exchange for our freedom.

"Only federated National Garden Clubs can install a Gold Star Marker," Parks continued, "and the Corbin Garden Club is proud to be in a position to do so."
