Golf cart driver, 65, killed in crash with pickup truck in On Top of the World

Florida Highway Patrol troopers said a 65-year-old woman was killed Tuesday when the golf cart she was driving was involved in a crash.

Here's what we know:

Where? The crash happened at Southwest 79th Terrace Road and Southwest 87th Loop in the Indigo East subdivision, which is part of On Top of the World.

What happened? Troopers said the woman was driving the cart east on 87th Loop. Meanwhile, a Dodge pickup truck with an enclosed trailer in tow was traveling south on 79th Terrace Road, passing by the 87th Loop intersection.

Troopers said the golf cart driver went through a stop sign and entered the path of the pickup truck. The golf cart hit the right side of the pickup. The woman was ejected from the golf cart and was struck by the trailer.

The woman was taken to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital, where she later died.

Time: Marion County Fire Rescue spokesman James Lucas said his agency was assigned the call at 11:48 a.m. and arrived at 11:51 a.m. A trauma code was called at 11:54 a.m.

Who died? FHP identified the deceased only as a woman, age 65, from Ocala. The pickup driver is a 39-year-old man from Summerfield. Troopers said he was not injured. The agency press releases no longer include the names of people killed or injured in crashes.

Deaths: Tuesday's fatality was the third traffic death in less than a week in Marion County. On Friday, troopers investigated a two-vehicle wreck along SR 200 where a woman was killed. The next day, FHP officials responded to a traffic crash involving two vehicles on Interstate 75 where a woman died.

To date, 63 people have died in traffic crashes since the start of the year. In 2022, 99 people lost their lives on county roads. The numbers do not include traffic deaths that occurred within the city limits of Dunnellon, Belleview or Ocala.
