GOLF: Matthews gets sponsor exemption for 3M Open

Jun. 29—Because of his play this season on the Korn Ferry Tour, Brandon Matthews already secured his first PGA Tour card for 2022-23.

However, the 27-year-old Dupont native and Temple University graduate continues to get a head start playing PGA Tour events.

Matthews received a sponsor exemption to play in the 3M Open on July 21-24 at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota.

It will be the fourth career PGA Tour start for Matthews and his third this season.

In May, he received a sponsors exemption to the Wells Fargo Championship at TPC Potomac in Maryland and missed the cut, shooting a 7-over-par 144 (70-77) in the first two rounds.

He qualified for and played in the U.S. Open two weeks ago at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. He made the cut and, after a birdie on his first hole of the third round, was tied for 16th place, four shots out of the lead. But he struggled the rest of the way and finished 60th with a 16-over 296.

His PGA Tour debut came in March 2020 on a sponsor exemption at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill Golf Club in Orlando, Florida. He missed the cut, shooting 12-over 156.

On the Korn Ferry Tour this season, Matthews has made the cut in 10 of 16 events. He has one win — at the Astara Championship in Bogota, Columbia, on Feb. 13 — and tied for second at the Panama Championship one week earlier. He has seven top-25 finishes, including last week when he tied for 15th at the Live and Work in Maine Open. He is third in the tour standings with 949 points.

This week, Matthews is scheduled to play in The Ascendant presented by Blue, beginning Thursday at TPC Colorado in Berthoud, Colorado.
