Golf: Meyer runner-up at Wisconsin junior amateur
Aug. 4—COTTAGE GROVE, Wis. — Three good rounds from Lake Nebagamon golfer Trent Meyer wasn't enough to beat two great ones from William Harned on Wednesday at the Wisconsin State Junior Amateur golf tournament.
Harned's final-round 66 was enough to best Meyer's 68 at The Oaks Golf Course.
Harned, a rising junior at Brunswick School in Greenwich, Connecticut, finished the 54-hole stroke play event at 6-under 207 after going 66-75-66 over three days on the par-71 layout. Meyer finished at 5-under after going 70-70-68.
Meyer, an incoming freshman at Wisconsin-Green Bay, started the final round three shots behind Camden Schmidt of Germantown, Wisconsin and one ahead of Harned. Meyer drew even with Schmidt by birdieing 11 to go to 4-under, which was immediately followed by a two-hour weather delay.
Harned birdied the first hole after the break to make it a three-way tie.
Schmidt's rollercoaster finish of two double-bogeys and three birdies wasn't enough to keep pace, as Meyer birdied 15 and Harned 16. Meyer flew the green on 17 and made bogey to fall a shot behind going to the 18th.
On the final hole, Meyer had a 4-foot putt for eagle on the par-5, but burned the edge, and the matching birdies were enough for Harned, who played the last 27 holes without a bogey.
Meyer has figured repeatedly in amateur tournaments throughout the season without getting his big break. Last week, he was the runner-up in 17-18-year-old division of the Wisconsin Junior Masters at Racine, as Michael Addie of Sussex took the match play final 3-and-2.
Meyer finished tied for fourth in the WIAA Division 2 state tournament at Blackwolf Run in Kohler, missed qualifying for the Wisconsin State Amateur by one shot and missed qualifying for the Wisconsin State Open by two shots.
