Mount Union men's and women's golf coach Bill Kirkwood is working this week at the U.S. Women's Open at Pine Needles in Southern Pines, N.C.

Kirkwood is serving as a marshal on the ninth hole at the event.

Kirkwood has been Mount Union's coach for four seasons. He led the Purple Raiders' women's team to the Ohio Athletic Conference championship and an NCAA tournament appearance in 2019. Kirkwood has also been instrumental in the development and completion of the new Melvin Snode Golf Center on campus.

Prior to being named head coach, Kirkwood was an assistant coach with the Purple Raiders for two seasons, helping Mount Union to a pair of OAC championships and two NCAA tournament appearances. The men's team posted a second-place finish in the conference.

As a youth Kirkwood caddied at Oakwood Country Club in Cleveland and as an adult he served as a youth coach at Riceland Golf Course in Orrville. Kirkwood and his wife Susan reside in Wooster.

Kirkwood is not the only Mount Union connection at Pine Needles this week. Mike McGee, a 1997 graduate of Mount Union, is the husband of LPGA Hall of Fame member Annika Sorenstam, who is playing in the event.
