Gomez, Abilene Wylie quiet El Paso Del Valle in region quarterfinal baseball series opener

MONAHANS – Garrett Graham and Tye Briscoe drove in a run each, and Trey Gomez hurled a two-hitter as Wylie beat El Paso Del Valle 3-1 in Game 1 of the Region I-5A quarterfinal baseball series here Thursday.

Gomez struck out two and walked one in the complete-game gem. He had retired 12 consecutive batters and 14 of his first 15 when Aiden Gomez broke up his no-hitter with a solo home run with one out in the fifth. Gomez had given up a one-out walk in the first inning.

Only one other Del Valle batter reached after Aiden Gomez’s homer. Isaac Vega led off the seventh with a single, but Gomez retired the side without giving up another run to finish off the Conquistadores (27-7).

The Bulldogs (24-5) already had a 3-0 lead before Aiden Gomez’s homer.

Braden Regala led off the third with a walk, and J.T. Thompson followed with a single. Regala stole third with one out and scored on Graham’s ground out to short. Briscoe chased Thompson home with a single.

Wylie added a run in the fourth. Reese Borho led off with a walk, took second on K.J. Long’s sacrifice bunt before scoring on an error.

Graham led Wylie with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, while Briscoe had two hits.

Del Valle starter Jack Gallegos gave up three runs on three hits. He struck out four and walked five in four innings. Aiden Gomez pitched three scoreless innings in relief – allowing three hits. He struck out one and walked none.

Game 2 is 11 a.m. Friday at Monahans, and, if needed, Game 3 will be played afterward.

The Wylie-Del Valle series winner plays the Aledo (24-10)-Burleson Centennial (24-10) winner in the region semifinals next week.

Aledo was leading Centennial 4-0 in the top of the fourth on Thursday when that game was suspended because of light failure at Fort Worth Boswell’s field. The game will continue at 5 p.m. Friday, with Game 2 to follow.
