'Good to be around football again.' Week after injury, Bryce Ramirez all smiles as Texas Tech plays Texas

Texas Tech defensive ends Bryce Ramirez (54) and Tyree Wilson (19) team up to trap North Carolina State quarterback Devin Leary (13) during a non-conference game Sept. 17, 2022 in Raleigh. Ramirez suffered a devastating lower-leg injury on the next series.

Just a week after suffering a gruesome compound fracture to his lower left leg that ended his 2022 season, Texas Tech linebacker Bryce Ramirez was all smiles while providing an update on his recovery on Saturday.

Ramirez, from a private box inside Jones AT&T Stadium during the Texas-Texas Tech game in Lubbock, said on the ESPN broadcast that he isn't so much thinking about himself during the start of his recovery process as he is his teammates.

"I've just been thinking about the guys, really," Ramirez said. "I'm not so much trying to think about myself and the situation I'm going through. I'm trying to be the best teammate I can be at the end of the day, no matter what. That's always my mindset. I don't want to get down with what's going on in my life or my situation. But that's just how I approach life in general."

Ramirez underwent two surgeries in North Carolina last week after leaving Texas Tech's game against NC State.

The 6-foot-2 sophomore said this is the first outing he's had since returning to Lubbock.

"It's exciting," he said. "I'm really just happy to be in the stadium. I'm ready to just watch the guys play. It's good to be around football again."

ESPN reported that the Red Raiders told Ramirez they wanted to upset No. 21 Texas (which would be the first win for the Red Raiders over the Longhorns in Lubbock since 2008) this weekend in his honor.

Ramirez is taking a different approach.

"At the end of the day, I don't want them to win it for me. I just want them to win."
