The good, bad and the hopeful: Striking images from 2022 on view at Photographic Centre

Loved ones attend a funeral ceremony for activist and soldier R. Ratushnyi , 24, who was killed while fighting in the Kharkiv region during the Russian invasion, at Baikove Cemetery in Kyiv, Ukraine, on June 18, 2022. Ratushnyi has become a symbol of revolution and mourners came wrapped in the Ukrainian flag, leaving flowers and sorrow at his gravesite.

An indelible moment may pass too quickly to register, but if a skilled photographer is on hand, that moment can be preserved forever.

The Palm Beach Photographic Centre is hosting an exhibit of masterful images by photographers working for Zuma Press, which bills itself as the “world’s largest independent press agency and wire service.” The free exhibition opens Thursday and runs through July 30 at the center, which is in West Palm Beach’s downtown City Center complex.

“The BIG Picture: It’s Been a Minute!” features images from 2022 in three categories of events: Good, bad and hopeful.

“This new exhibition captures humanity at its darkest hours and witnesses others rise above and beyond, showing that hope never dies,” said Scott Mc Kiernan, founder of Zuma Press, in a prepared statement. “Thanks to these courageous photographers on the front lines of history, we can see and share the good, bad and beautiful of it all at the Palm Beach Photographic Centre.”

The show also includes work by Carol Guzy, winner of the Still Photographer of the Year Award from the White House News Photographers Association. Additional nature images were provided by Robin Loznak, and photos from the 95th annual Oscars were taken by Kevin Sullivan.

“These are moments in time that will stop you in your tracks and stay with you forever, as the photographers’ unique talent and skills bring you to the heart of the matter at hand, with grace, respect and chilling honesty,” said Fatima NeJame, CEO of the Photographic Centre, in a prepared statement.

The exhibition and lecture also will be available at the center’s website.
