The Good Doctor will be ending with its seventh season.
A teaser for the return of the ABC medical drama confirms that it will be "the farewell season" for Freddie Highmore and the ensemble cast of writer/producer David Shore's show.
The clip looks back on some The Good Doctor's most emotional moments, including his bond with mentor Dr. Aaron Glassman (Richard Schiff) and blossoming romance with Lea Dilallo (Paige Spara).
Freddie said: "Playing Dr. Shaun Murphy has been an immense privilege and one of the most remarkable and rewarding experiences of my life.
“I will always be grateful to David, Liz, and Erin as well as the hugely talented – and lovely – cast, writers, and crew who made this show possible. Caring deeply is what got us here. Thank you to Sony and ABC, and to everyone who has watched along at home. With love from Vancouver… tequila, stat!”
The news comes on the heels of some changes for The Good Doctor, with the departure of Hill Harper due to his political ambitions and the return of former cast member Chuku Modu as a series regular.
Producers David Shore, Liz Friedman and Erin Gunn said of the show ending: "The Good Doctor has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but it’s time to say goodbye.
"We are incredibly proud of the work we’ve done and the message we’ve been privileged to be a part of. We look forward to giving our fantastic fans, the truly extraordinary Freddie Highmore, the rest of our talented actors (and friends), and the best crew in the business the series ending that you all deserve. Thank you, Sony; thank you, ABC; thank you all."
ABC had been working on a potential legal spin-off for The Good Doctor, set to star Desperate Housewives' Felicity Huffman and Nancy Drew's Kennedy McMann, but ultimately chose to cancel the series.
The Good Doctor returns on Tuesday, February 20 on ABC in the US, and on Sky Witness and NOW in the UK.
