SPICER — A benefit for Melissa Freiberg will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 1, at the American Legion in Spicer. Freewill donation meal, silent auction until 6:30 p.m., bake sale from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

She has had end-stage renal failure for 15 years. During this time she has been doing daily kidney dialysis. She is preparing to have a kidney transplant at New York University. She will be required to stay in New York for two month following her surgery at her own expense.

All proceeds will be used for Melissa's travel and lodging expenses. Credit cards, Paypal, Venmo, Zelle and cash will be accepted. Donations can be submitted on gofundme.com/f/kidneyformelissa or mailed to Central Minnesota Credit Union, 163 Highway 23, Spicer MN 56288.

Farmers Co-op Oil Company

DANUBE — The Danube Farmers Co-op Oil Company and Cenex donated $5,000 for the update to the Heart of the City Playground in Danube. With a dream to transform the playground into a handicap-accessible park for their son with cerebral palsy, two Danube parents raised money, planned and reconstructed an all abilities park, complete with a new community clubhouse. The grant was given to the Danube Area Athletic Club who takes care of the park. The club will use the money to support the recent construction.

Homeless crisis line

WILLMAR — United Community Action Partnership has a 24/7 crisis line for people experiencing homelessness. The crisis line will operate outside of regular business hours and will be solely dedicated to helping people find emergency shelter.

Anyone in need of shelter should first call their local UCAP office during regular hours. Outside of business hours, those in need should call the crisis line. Those in Kandiyohi, McLeod, Meeker, Renville, and Redwood Counties should dial 320-587-5244, extension 12. Screening questions will be asked to determine eligibility and coordinate appropriate shelter and other services as needed.

Habitat for Humanity

WILLMAR — Habitat for Humanity of West Central Minnesota ReStore accepts donations of building materials, large appliances, furniture and more. All donations must be approved by staff before acceptance. Donations can be brought to 2424 First Street South in Willmar between 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday. Kandiyohi County Historical Society: May 15-23, I Love Local History virtual 5K run/walk. Registration deadline is May 14. Cost is $30 for adults and teens, ages 12 and under are $10. Walk, run, jump, or bike the 3.1 miles and post your pictures on the Kandiyohi County Historical Society's Facebook, Instagram or Twitter page when you are done.
