RETIRED EDUCATORS MEETING

Polk County Retired Educators Association, Unit 1, met Jan. 4, at First Presbyterian Church, 175 Lake Hollingsworth Drive, Lakeland. PCREA is a non-profit affiliate of the Florida Retired Educators Association and the National Retired Teacher Association. One of the purposes of the PCREA is to assist the elderly in Polk County. Guest speaker was Beverly Cornelius, founder and operator of Senior Orphans for more than 30 years. During the holiday season, approximately 800 food boxes and items were dispersed to the elderly in need. Donations are received from a variety of support groups and dispersed only through social workers working with Department of Children and Families, Peace River Association, in-home health care agencies or local hospice groups, who screen the clients and provide a list of names to Senior Orphans volunteer staff who prepare the donation packages. Designated social workers pick up and deliver the packages. Nonperishable new or gently used, clean items are acceptable donations. Visit www.seniororphansofpolkcounty.org.
