Why Marrying An Intelligent Woman ‘Helps Protect Against Dementia’

Men can help protect themselves from the misery of dementia by marrying an intelligent woman, scientists have revealed.

Pairing up with a brainy lady acts as a “buffer” against the disease, the Daily Mail reports.

After studying the health of identical twins, dementia experts found that a person’s environment can have a major impact on their chances of developing the disease.

Scientists said that those whose brain scans showed physical signs of the disease - but had yet to develop any symptoms - tended to be wealthy, “highly intelligent” and “in high-powered jobs.”

Speaking during a talk called Dementia: How Can We Protect Ourselves at the Oxford Literary Festival, Professor Lawrence Whalley, an emeritus professor of mental health at the University of Aberdeen, said: “The thing a boy is never told he needs to do if he wants to live a longer life - but what he should do – is marry an intelligent woman. There is no better buffer than intelligence.”

More than 800,000 people in the UK are currently suffering with dementia, and it’s expected that this figure will have reached around a million by 2021.
