GOOD NEWS MATTERS: Little Rock student-athletes get shopping spree

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A central Arkansas organization is going beyond the boundaries to level the playing field for kids who want to get into the game.

Fifteen ballplayers from the Arkansas Travelers Youth Foundation jumped on a tour bus and were taken to Academy Sports on Thursday.

Academy and Beyond Sports Lab is a Black-owned business that gave the young players a $200 gift card each for equipment.

The idea is to get kids in the game and hit a home run for fun.

Lance Restum with the Arkansas Travelers Youth Foundation said so much of it is to give kids the home-field advantage in life.

“To do these fun things in the community, baseball and sports in general, is so much more expensive than it used to be,” Restum said. “Our goal is to break down those economic barriers, get kids outside, battle childhood obesity, battle childhood diabetes, battle screen time and hopefully make some future all-stars.”

The kids will now be ready for the 3rd Annual Black History Month Baseball and Softball Camp.

The camp emphasizes helping minority youth develop skills while focusing on being good teammates and leaders off and on the field.
