Good News For Sex Addicts!

The "sex addiction" diagnosis has long beena controversial one, with skeptics claiming that it's nothing more than an excuse used by libidinous people to justify their infidelity.

Butnew research indicatesthat sex addiction may indeed be a real disorder eligible for inclusion in the next edition of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).

This is great news for some of Hollywood's most notorious skirt chasers, whose so-called "sex addictions" were once thought of as lame cop outs for their bad behavior. Click through the slides below to see five divorced celebrity "sex addicts," then weigh in: Are you convinced that sex addiction is a real disorder?

Russell Brand

In 2005, Russell Brand <a href="http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=101881014">sought treatment</a> for his sex addiction at the <a href="http://www.keystonecenterecu.net/">KeyStone Center</a>, a facility located in a Philadelphia suburb. In his <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2007/nov/12/biography.mikeleigh">2007 memoir, "My Booky Wook,"</a> he dished about his sex-crazed days, writing: "At one point, about five years ago, I had a harem of about 10 women whom I would rotate in addition to one-night stands and random casual encounters." After Brand filed for divorce from Katy Perry in December 2011, <a href="http://blog.music.aol.com/2012/01/04/russell-brand-sex-addiction-divorce/">rumors circulated</a> that perhaps his insatiable sexual appetite was to blame. But Brand recently <a href="http://sixtyminutes.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=8536475">told Australia's "60 Minutes"</a> that general incompatibility actually caused the split. Their marriage was <a href="http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/katy-perry-russell-brands-divorce-finalized-2012167">officially dissolved </a>in July 2012.

Tiger Woods

In January 2010, less than two months after <a href="http://www.foxnews.com/us/2009/11/28/tiger-woods-car-crash-came-explosive-story-claiming-affair/">reports first surfaced</a> that Tiger Woods had <a href="http://entertainment.blogs.foxnews.com/2009/12/07/tiger-woods-linked-to-10-women-cori-rist-jamie-jungers/">numerous affairs</a> while married to Elin Nordegren, the golfer <a href="http://articles.nydailynews.com/2010-01-19/gossip/17943385_1_tiger-woods-rehab-benoit-denizet-lewis">checked into Pine Grove Behavioral Health and Addiction Services</a> in Hattiesburg, Miss. to treat the sex addiction that he claimed destroyed his marriage. In February of that year, he <a href="http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2010/02/tiger_woods_i_was_unfaithful_i.html">issued a televised apology</a> stating: "The issue involved here was my repeated irresponsible behavior. I was unfaithful. I had affairs. I cheated. What I did is not acceptable. And I am the only person to blame." Woods and Nordegren, who <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,710377,00.html">wed in Barbados</a> in 2004, <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20414961,00.html">finalized their divorce</a> in August 2010.

Jesse James

In March 2010, Jesse James <a href="http://www.tmz.com/2010/03/31/jesse-james-rehab-arizona-sierra-tuscon-drugs-alcohol-sex-addition-mistresses/">checked into Arizona treatment facility Sierra Tucson</a> to address the alleged sex addiction that triggered his divorce from Sandra Bullock. Several months later, <a href="http://gawker.com/5547912/jesse-james-blames-nontraditional-sex-addiction-on-child-abuse">in a "Nightline" interview</a>, James told host Vicki Mabrey: "I don't think I have a sex addiction where I'm running around trying to have sex with everyone and I can't stop... I think I do things to sabotage my life, including having extramarital affairs, texting, overworking myself, injuring myself, doing stunts and stupid things." Bullock <a href="http://articles.cnn.com/2010-04-28/entertainment/sandra.bullock.divorce_1_discord-or-conflict-divorce-filing?_s=PM:SHOWBIZ">filed for divorce</a> from James in April 2010, after five years of marriage. James reportedly had <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/melissa-smith-brigitte-daguerre-claim-affair-jesse-james/story?id=10191495#.UHXyABafGRl">affairs with several women during that time</a>, including tattoo model <a href="http://www.intouchweekly.com/entertainment/news/touch-exclusive-interviewsandra-bullocks-husband-caught-cheating#.UHXyOhafGRl">Michelle "Bombshell" McGee</a>.

David Duchovny

David Duchovny <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/story?id=5686632&page=1#.UHXcWBafGRk">plays a sex addict</a> on Showtime's "Californication," but he also happens to be one in real life. In 2008, the actor <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/28/david-duchovny-in-rehab-f_n_122268.html">voluntarily checked himself</a> into a sex rehab program. But Duchovny wasn't always able to admit he had a problem. In an <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2008/08/29/us-duchovny-idUSN2835847820080829">interview with <em>Playgirl</em> in 1997</a>, he told the magazine: "I'm not a sex addict...I have never been to those meetings. It's hurtful to my family and if I was involved with a woman in a monogamous relationship, it would be hurtful to her." Duchovny and wife Tea Leoni <a href="http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/tea-leoni-david-duchovny-what-went-wrong-2011296">separated</a> (for the <a href="http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,438684,00.html">second time)</a> in June 2011, after 14 years of marriage. Rumors that they <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/09/gillian-anderson-david-duvhovny-dating-xfiles-rumors_n_1759841.html">quietly divorced</a> surfaced in 2012, though it has yet to be confirmed.

Eric Benét

Amid <a href="http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20148116,00.html">rumors of his infidelity</a>, R&B singer Eric Benet entered a <a href="http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20148116,00.html">35-day treatment program</a> for his sex addiction in 2002. Years later, he <a href="http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20148116,00.html">denied having an addiction</a>, and insisted he only went to rehab at his mother-in-law's suggestion. "I'm not a sex addict," he told <em><a href="http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20148116,00.html">People</em> magazine in 2005</a>. "I wanted to save my marriage and do anything necessary to do that. I went and heard other people's stories and realized this is really not my struggle." Even though Benét sought treatment for the addiction that caused a rift in their marriage, his now-ex-wife Halle Berry <a href="http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,646160,00.html">filed for divorce</a> anyway in 2004. The former ouple <a href="http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20133729,00.html">tied the knot</a> in 2001 in a secret ceremony in Santa Barbara, Calif.
