The third season of Prime Video's supernatural fantasy comedy Good Omens has been confirmed to be its last.

Starring David Tennant and Michael Sheen as the demon Crowley and the angel Aziraphale, the series follows the pair as they battle heaven, hell and everything in between.

It has now officially been renewed for a third season after months of speculation – but this will be the final trip to the underworld for the show, according to a statement released by Neil Gaiman, who serves as both showrunner and the co-author of the novel that the first season was based on, alongside Terry Pratchett.

"I'm so happy finally to be able to finish the story Terry and I plotted in 1989 and in 2006,” he said.

“Terry was determined that if we made Good Omens for television, we could take the story all the way to the end.

"Season one was all about averting Armageddon, dangerous prophecies and the End of the World. Season two was sweet and gentle, although it may have ended less joyfully than a certain Angel and Demon might have hoped."

Continuing, Gaiman gave fans a sneak peek at what to expect in the upcoming instalment of Good Omens.

"Now in season three, we will deal once more with the end of the world. The plans for Armageddon are going wrong. Only Crowley and Aziraphale working together can hope to put it right. And they aren't talking.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, production on season three is set to begin "soon".

Before being officially renewed, the third season made a big change: Douglas Mackinnon, who served as showrunner of the series and director, confirmed that he wouldn't be returning via Instagram.

The second season ended on a gripping cliffhanger for viewers, with its two leading characters finally confessing their love for each other.

Good Omens is available on Prime Video.
