The Good Place showrunner Mike Schur has opened up about that major twist in this week's episode.

For those who haven't seen it yet, or just don't care about being spoiled, Eleanor, Michael and the rest of the gang ended up succeeding in the experiment, proving to Maya Rudolph's omniscient judge Gen (not so omniscient, as it turns out) that the afterlife's point system is broken.

Happy days! Except not, because the judge then sends Chidi (William Jackson Harper) into a deep sleep and decides that Earth and its entire history now has to be erased from the universe (not too sure what that means for all the other planets, though).

Anyway, as is often the case, Eleanor comes up with a last-minute plan: wake up Chidi and give him back all of his previously-erased memories so he can help come up with a solution.

While that meant we didn't get to see much of Chidi in the episode, Schur has now promised that the character will be the central focus of the next instalment.

"Yeah. Look, he made this gigantic sacrifice and had his memories wiped so he could help everybody in writing this part of the story," Schur told GQ.

"We were like, 'We're going to have to lose Will for an episode'. It's basically a Weekend at Bernie's thing. He's floating around a pool in a Hawaiian shirt unable to talk. I can say the next episode makes up for having lost him. Without giving too much away, it's very Chidi-centric."

The Good Place airs on NBC in the US, with episodes premiering a day later on Netflix. You can also catch it on E4 in the UK.
