A man who accused a teenage girl of cutting in line at a Berwyn grocery store stabbed another man to death Friday morning after the good Samaritan tried to intervene when the attacker began punching the girl and her mother, police said.
- Selfless, brave, a hero. That's how a man is being remembered this morning after losing his life defending two women under attack inside a Berwin grocery store. CBS 2's Meredith Barack joining us now with how that man died trying to diffuse a tense situation, Meredith.
MEREDITH BARACK: Suzanne, that man Umberto Guzman stepped in to help after a teenager asked her mom, who is a cashier at the store, the price of a water bottle. That then set off a series of events that would lead to two men being stabbed and Guzman dying as a result. Police say a man inside Valle's grocery store on Cermak Road in Berwyn accused the teenage girl of cutting the checkout line. He started swearing and punching her in the face. The cashier, who happened to be that teen's mom, came out from behind the counter when the abusive customer started hitting her as well. That's when Umberto Guzman, who was inside the store, intervened. The man who assaulted the mother and daughter walked towards the exit only to return pulling out a knife and fatally stabbing Guzman. He was just 32. The entire incident comes as a shock to those who frequent the store.
KYLE RAFFERTY: Just really hit home and just the fact that he would put his life on the line to, you know, to do the right thing.
MEREDITH BARACK: That stabbing suspect ran from the store and was found in a nearby alley by another man who tried to intervene. He wound up stabbing that man as well. Berwyn police eventually caught up to the stabbing suspect and arrested him in a nearby backyard. That other victim, expected to recover.
