The Good Samaritan Society announced Tuesday that it will be closing its nursing home in Lennox by July 15, which houses about 40 residents.

Lennox's Good Sam will move its staff and residents to other Good Sam facilities in Canton and Sioux Falls.

The senior care industry, including the Lennox Society home, is facing rising care costs that have only been made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Good Sam in Lennox has also had difficulty hiring new staff, and the temporary Medicaid reimbursements from the governor's office haven't been enough to provide a permanent solution, Society officials said in a press release.

These challenges have created a situation that is no longer sustainable for the nursing home.

"We care deeply about our residents, who are like family to us, and are committed to a smooth transition of all residents to nearby Society locations," a letter addressed to residents and families states.

The Good Samaritan Society also announced it will close the nursing home in Clear Lake and said that the nursing home in Newell, Iowa, will relocate its residents and staff to Good Samaritan locations in Manson and Holstein in Iowa.

"More than 70 percent of the residents we serve live in rural communities, said Vice President of Operations Aimee Middleton in a press release, "and we remain resolute in ensuring they have access to care as close to home as possible."
