MUKWONAGO - Goodwill Industries International's chain of stores recently extended into Mukwonago, at 101 Arrowhead Drive, the seventh link in Waukesha County and a sign that Goodwill is continuing in its efforts to raise organizational funds through donated merchandise.

Goodwill, which has stood out in the thrift store market since 1902, isn't alone. In Waukesha County and beyond, the familiar secondhand retail store names include the Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul, whose thrift stores have become high-profile fixtures. Those customers also find their way to smaller, charity-based stores.

Opening in Mukwonago, with a 16,000-square-foot facility in a retail center just south of the Interstate 43 interchange with Highway 83, increases Goodwill's accessibility, said chief retail officer Skip Dexter of Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Wisconsin and Metropolitan Chicago. That regional Goodwill affiliate organization, which dates back to 1919, is responsible for the new store and the others in Waukesha County.

"What makes shopping and donating at Goodwill Store and Donations Centers unique is that it offers consumers a sustainable way to give items a second life while giving back to their local communities," Dexter said.

In the county, Goodwill also has store and donation centers in Brookfield, Menomonee Falls, Muskego, New Berlin and two locations in Waukesha. Collectively, using the most recent whole-year data available, Goodwill officials noted that the organization served 219 people in Waukesha County through its job resource and community-based support programs. It also employed 527 Waukesha County residents. Add to that the 629 county residents who got emergency assistance through the Goodwill Cares Community Assistance Program.

For those not interested in thrift shopping, the organization also accepts financial donations. Information on the region's Goodwill operations is available at goodwillsew.com/how-you-can-help.
