Google doodle celebrates the US women's soccer team's World Cup win

The Google illustration shows Lady Liberty as "a victorious football player flying the flag of our country," artist Roxie Vizcarra said.

On Sunday, the United States women's national soccer team won the FIFA World Cup final against the Netherlands with a final score of 2-0.

Google celebrated the win with a doodle created by illustrator Roxie Vizcarra. In the static illustration, Lady Liberty holds the American flag behind her back over hands of a cheering crowd waving flags and sparklers with fireworks in the background.

"To me, there are few things more evocative of liberty and American values than women excelling in a traditionally male space, and I hope my Google Doodle celebrating the USNWT's victory reflects that," she said.

Vizcarra is a Brooklyn-based professional illustrator. She told USA TODAY that she particularly enjoys creating sports illustrations.

This Google doodle is not her first. She also created a doodle on October 12, 2018 that paid respects to Major League Baseball player Roberto Clemente.

What inspired Vizcarra most during the Women's World Cup is the team's strong bond and sense of unity on and off the field, she said.

She created the the victory doodle using pen and ink and applied the colors digitally afterward.

The design was influenced by the representation of Liberty as depicted through history in American illustration.

"Though noble, she is often elevated to the point of objectification, so I sought to reclaim her as a feminist symbol by recasting her as a victorious football player flying the flag of our country behind her," said Vizcarra.
