Google Employee Tests Positive for Coronavirus

A Google employee at the company’s Switzerland office has tested positive for coronavirus, the company said Friday.

The unnamed employee was working in the tech giant’s Zurich division and was only in the office “for a limited time before they had any symptoms,” a spokesperson said. “We have taken — and will continue to take — all necessary precautionary measures, following the advice of public health officials, as we prioritize everyone’s health and safety.”

While the Zurich office will remain open for now, the company said it is now restricting staff travel to China, Iran, Japan, South Korea and parts of Italy — all countries that have seen significant outbreaks of the virus.

Google and parent company Alphabet has roughly 120,000 employees worldwide and operates offices in more than 50 countries.

The virus’ spread is prompting a number of companies to reconsider travel plans and upcoming industry events, and some Hollywood productions and theatrical releases have been postponed until further notice. Game publishers including Microsoft, Epic Games and Sony have pulled out of the upcoming Game Developers Conference, scheduled for March 16-18 in San Francisco.

Google holds its annual developer conference called I/O May 12-14 and has not yet announced plans to reschedule.
