Google Fiber internet service coming to Round Rock

Houses near Ferndale Drive in Round Rock will be among the first to have access to Google Fiber as construction has begun.

The city of Round Rock is set to approve the installation of Google Fiber's high-speed internet service on Thursday during its regular city City Council meeting.

The agreement to be considered will allow the company to install, maintain and operate a fiber optic network in the public right of way in the city.

“We enjoy being on the cutting edge of technology here in Round Rock, so we are excited that Google Fiber has chosen our community for its next expansion,” Mayor Craig Morgan said in a news release announcing the partnership on Friday. “We look forward to our residents and businesses having even more options for internet service.”

Google Fiber offers one and two gigabytes to customers without data caps, equipment fees and annual contracts.

Construction on the network is expected to begin by late 2023. Service will become available to Round Rock customers as portions of the network are completed.

According to a news release, the company's goal is to provide service to as many households as possible.

“Fast, reliable internet is essential for life today,” said John-Michael Cortez, government and community affairs manager for Google Fiber. “We’re looking forward to serving Round Rock and being a part of the city’s connected future.”
