Gophers safety Tyler Nubin will return for 2023

The two-minute video Tyler Nubin posted Friday afternoon seemed to be setting up his exit from the Gophers football program. The star safety was giving out thanks and reflecting on big wins over his four-year career.

But there was a plot twist.

“I’m not done yet,” Nubin said over a montage. “I’m blessed to have an opportunity to finish out my degree, play one more season for my brothers, this team and the best fans in college football. Minnesota, I come home.”

Nubin, an all-Big Ten second team member from St. Charles, Ill., had received increased attention from NFL scouts this season but will come back for his fifth and final season of eligibility.

Nubin missed the 23-16 win over Wisconsin last weekend with a broken right hand but should be healthy to play in the Gophers’ to-be-determined bowl game in late December, a source told the Pioneer Press last week.

Nubin led the team with four interceptions and was third with 55 total tackles. His return also helps a defensive secondary that will lose safety Jordan Howden and cornerback Terell Smith, both of whom are out of eligibility in 2022. Smith will play in the East-West Shrine Game.
