County commissioner Karol "KZ" Bolton is the incumbent. She is unopposed in the Democratic primary election on Aug. 2. She has served on the county commission since being appointed in 2002.

“I want to be a much needed fresh voice and advocate for an area of the County that has been largely ignored," Gauss said in a news release. "The citizens of this community are looking for and deserve an actively engaged Commissioner who will listen, understand and be responsive to their needs.”

Gauss was reelected to the city commission in 2021. His term ends in 2025. He was first elected to the city commission in 2019 to fill a vacancy.

“I attend as many meetings and events as possible because that’s where I have an opportunity to gather the feedback I need to do my job," Gauss said in the release. "I support the All About Adrian (A3) Coalition and the Ebeid Neighborhood Promise which was announced earlier this year as a much needed investment in Adrian which aims to improve the health and welfare of those within our community.”

Gauss said if elected to the county commission he will make economic development, affordable housing, mental health treatment, drug rehabilitation, public safety and increased government transparency his top priorities.

Gauss grew up in Adrian and spent over 30 years in executive management at Toyota in California before moving back to his hometown in 2012.

No Republicans filed for the county commission's 5th District seat.
