Gorze nabs victory at Northwest Regional
Nov. 13—EAGLE, Idaho — For the second straight weekend, Crater senior Tyrone Gorze put his name into the record books.
Seven days after winning his second consecutive Class 5A state cross-country title, Gorze claimed another prestigious victory Saturday in running a course record at the Nike Cross Nationals Northwest Regional Championships at Eagle Island State Park.
Gorze finished with a time of 14 minutes, 51.6 seconds on the daunting 5-kilometer course, smashing the previous course record of 14:58.4 that was set on Sept. 24 by Landon Heemeyer of Rocky Mountain High School in Meridian, Idaho.
Second-place finisher Weston Brown of Bozeman XC finished in 15:03.7. Heemeyer (15:24.1) placed eighth.
Just like they did last Saturday at Lane Community College in Eugene, the Crater boys, running as the Southern Oregon Project, claimed the team title and qualified for the national meet in Portland on Saturday, Dec. 3.
SOP finished with 75 points, with Stumptown XC Club in second with 101 points.
Crater's Josiah Tostenson (15:28.7) finished in 10th, while Jeffrey Hellman (15:46.4) was 27th, Tayvon Kitchen (15:53.0) was 34th and Shaun Garnica (15:59.3) was 43rd in the field of 195 runners.
Crater's Lindsay Siebert, who finished third at last week's state meet, placed 17th in the girls 5k with a time of 18:34.4.
