Gosport Lazy Days return Aug. 11-14

With the start of school comes the start of festival season in and around Owen County. The annual Gosport Lazy Days will take place Thursday, Aug. 11 through Sunday, Aug. 14 in the town of Gosport. This year's festival theme is "Home is where the Heart is."

Events will begin Thursday, Aug. 11 with vendor booths opening at 5 p.m. Also at 5 p.m., registration for the free sidewalk chalk art contest will begin, followed by the chalk art contest at 5:30 p.m. The opening ceremonies for this year's Gosport Lazy Days will be held at 6 p.m. Rounding out the night will be The Hey Hey Band from 7-9 p.m.

On Friday, Aug. 12, the evening's events will begin with the Tim Dittemore Memorial Car Show, starting at 3 p.m. The event is sponsored by Meineke Car Care. See Brad Corder on the northeast corner of Main and Fourth streets. Car show judging begins at 4:30 p.m.

Vendor booths open at 5 p.m. on Friday. Having a good time at the car show and perusing the vendor booths? Go grab yourself a tasty dinner at the Gosport VFW Auxiliary Fish Dinner at the VFW Post, from 5-7 p.m. Want to listen to some entertainment while eating your meal? Adam Crabtree Music will grace the stage, also from 5-7 p.m. Need some entertainment for your little ones? The annual kids games will be held from 5-8 p.m. To end the evening's events, everyone can boogie down with a street dance on Main Street from 8-10 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 13 will be a very busy day for the festival with registration for the Gosport Lions Club 5K from 6:45-7:15 a.m. The race will begin promptly at 7:30 a.m. The annual bike race will also be held, with registration at the bike shop, beginning at 8:30 a.m. A waiver must be signed and all participants must have a number on their back. Racing begins at 9 a.m.

Ready to see all the cute, smiling babies? The Lady Days baby contest pre-registration will start at 9:30 a.m. with the baby contest kicking off at 10 a.m. Vendor booths also open up at 10 a.m. and the free kids' games start at 10 a.m. Silly Safari will be on hand with their great show, beginning at 11 a.m. to delight the young and the young at heart.

Always a crowd favorite, the Lazy Days parade will start at 1 p.m. and make it's way through town. The parade will be followed by the ever-popular bed race, at approximately 2 p.m. Still ready to be entertained? Wrestling will begin at 3 p.m. Also at 3 p.m. is the Kappa Kappa Sigma raffle. Kids' games will begin at 3 pm. and will close down at 8 p.m. From 5-7 p.m. the VFW Auxiliary will feature cheeseburgers on Main Street all while Jim Hayden and The Country Playboys perform, also from 5-7 p.m. Jake Dodds will take the stage from 8-11 p.m.

The last day of the festival, Sunday, Aug. 14, will begin with the Gosport Lazy Days Community Church Service and Picnic. Churches involved include: Gosport Baptist Church, Gosport Christian Church, Gosport Methodist Church, Mt. Olivet Christian Church, Lighthouse Tabernacle, Family of God Church and Eminence Baptist Church. Any and all people and church families are welcome to join. Music will be held from 9-9:30 a.m. with a speaker from 9:30-10 a.m. Music will again be held from 10-10:30 a.m., followed by a speaker from 10:30-11 a.m. The service will conclude with music from 11-11:30 a.m. with a speaker from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. A pitch-in lunch will be held from 12-1 p.m. and a Gospel sing will commence at 1 p.m. Representatives from WRE (Weekly Religious Education) Gideon's will be present and available. For those interested in lunch and the services, please bring seating and table service.

For the pitch-in lunch, if your last name begins with A-E, please bring a vegetable dish; F-J a salad; K-O a dessert; P-T drinks; and U-Z bread or rolls.
